Background

Arey’s Pond Boat Yard is a full-service boat yard on a beautiful, sheltered waterfront location in South Orleans, MA. We specialize in building and maintaining catboats and other small, classic sailboats. In season, the boatyard runs a sailing program, Arey’s Pond Sailing School. The sailing school operates on Little Pleasant Bay and specializes in catboat private lessons for all ages and rentals. In addition, the boat yard runs a launch service for our mooring customers, which is staffed by the sailing school.

Job Description 

We are seeking qualified instructors for the 2024 summer season (Memorial Day – Labor Day) to teach private lessons, help manage rentals, and run launch service. Safety, fun, and learning are our priorities out on Pleasant Bay. The ideal candidate enjoys teaching, learning, and interacting with others on a daily basis. In addition, love of being on the water and soaking up the sun are a must.

Exceptional customer service skills are required along with handling light administrative tasks. This is a seasonal, part- or full-time job with employee perks. Full-time employment may be possible in certain situations. The majority of lessons and rentals are during the week, however, some weekend and evening hours are required. In addition, there are weekend opportunities to run our launch service from 8 am to 5 pm at an hourly rate with potential for tips.

Job Responsibilities 

  • Follow safety guidelines at all times while promoting a fun and instructive environment.
  • Teach private, two-hour sailing lessons throughout the week to students of all ages and skill levels in various conditions.
  • Manage catboat rentals: Have customers fill out proper forms, shuttle them to our moorings and back, assist in rigging if necessary.
  • Minor administration: Have customers fill out liability and emergency contact forms, take payments, file info in proper places.
  • Maintain equipment: Bail out boats following weather, fix equipment when necessary or alert appropriate departments of concern.
  • Boat checks: Ensure boats are properly put to bed, clean, and ready for the next use.
  • Launch Duty: Ferry customers to and from their moorings within the pond, maintain cleanliness of launch boat, notify service department when maintenance is required.

Job Requirements

  • 2+ years experience teaching or coaching students of all ages and in various weather conditions.
  • 2+ years powerboat and sailing experience. Intermediate to advanced proficiency in sailing and powerboating. Experience with gaff rigged boats preferred, sloop experience acceptable as well.
  • Good administrative and interpersonal skills. Ability to build a good rapport with students and mooring customers.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Current USCG Launch license or Captains is preferred but not required to apply.
  • Up to date ARC CPR and First Aid certificates preferred, though there is potential to get certified for right candidate.
  • US Sailing certifications are preferred but not required.
  • Must be able to pass a CORI screening.

Compensation: Competitive pay is dependent on experience. While on launch duty, an hourly rate (dependent on experience) will be applied whereas pay for private two-hour lessons and rentals is commission based with potential tips. The hourly rate for those can range from $35-$45 or more depending on size of lesson and length of rental. The more lessons and rentals you do, the more you can earn!
